High School is over with. 4 years ago you were just a freshman. Now look at you, still a freshman. Only this time you're a freshman to the real world.

I really recommend reading this all the way through for the most useful tips in surviving your first semester at college.

Setting up a Schedule:

Your first few semesters are most likely going to be some prerequisite classes before actually going into your major. So take these easy, but still focus. Those prerequisites could save your GPA in the long run. When possible try giving yourself a 1 hour break in your schedule in between classes. Too many classes back-to-back can be exhausting.

Your First Day(s):

Try always going to class a few minutes early to designate your "unassigned-assigned seat". Finding your class in a new campus can be challenging but very quick to catch on, so don't worry too much. The front center seat is best for learning purposes and getting more familiar with your professors, which can help in the future. Always try making a friend for the semester. This can come in handy, if you end up missing a class. There is always someone to fill you in on what you missed. The beginning of the semester is always the easiest time, so take advantage of your free time before midterms and exams drain you.

Textbooks:

Before buying or renting textbooks, please make sure you ABSOLUTELY need it. You can get A's in classes from just taking notes. But, if you feel like you need the textbook, always rent it or buy it used. (I'll get into access codes later on). textbooks aren't cheap, especially if you're taking multiple classes.

Access Codes:

Some classes require you to buy access codes for websites in order to even be able to do the classwork/homework. (Just another way for colleges to drain your pockets) Access Codes can be bought separately from the website directly. Worst case scenario is when the access code comes only from a brand new textbook. In which case, you'd be forced to cough up $200 to be able to participate in class.

Paying off your Tuition:

This surprisingly isn't mentioned as often as it should be, but you can pay your tuition monthly rather than one big payment at the beginning of the semester. It's more affordable this way. And paying cash in person is cheaper than paying it online. Colleges charge an extra percentage of your payment for using their online services. (just ANOTHER way of draining your pockets.

"Free" Events Being Held:

This could be ANYTHING. Crawfish Events, Parties, Games, etc. All that can come from the fees you pay outside of your tuition. So always try your best to take advantage of them. Get your money's worth.

Mental Health Above ALL:

Last but most definitely not least, Take care of your mental health. Let's face it lots of our old-fashioned parents don't take this into much perspective. But it is extremely important for the road to success. Anything is possible if your mind is set to it.

Mind Over Matter 🙇‍♂️
